Our client is the Major Programme Partner (MPP) The T2 Baggage Programme (T2BP) and the Asset Renewal Partner (ARP) for Terminal 1 and 2 on the AM+C programme, which are two of the six major programmes of work that Heathrow have committed to deliver within the H7 quinquennium. They will collaboratively deliver transformation safely, efficiently, and sustainably with an expert team enabling Heathrow to meet its objectives. This role will sit within the Design Management team and will report to the Senior Project Manager (Head of Design) or Senior Design Manager.

Our partnership at Heathrow continues to grow and as such the Heathrow team are looking for a MEPh Design Manager of an Mechanical bias is required to work with the Design Management team to proactively manage the permanent works designers, specialist designing subcontractors employed by the ARP of predominantly Building Services Designs to achieve design solutions that are safe, constructible, suitable for the operational environment, high quality, innovative, and are commercially advantageous.

The scope of the works is growing for our client at Heathrow, the Mechanical packages are varied across the ARP Programme. ARP has 3 key projects.

-          Rail

-          Terminal

-          Tunnel

Rail - The mechanical works in the station include new HVAC Systems Fire dampers / DX / VRF / BMS /BEMS

Terminal – Chilled water pipework replacement, chiller and colling tower replacement, commercial works around retail office building unit fit out.

Tunnel – The contracted scope in the tunnel is to install a new cladding system, we need to co-ordinate the design around the existing mechanical services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Management of the building Services Mechanical elements of design packages, identifying and managing the associated interfaces.
  • Management of designers to design process in accordance with Heathrow Gateway lifecycle requirements and standards along with Programme plans to ensure that the design of the permanent works and related temporary conditions are managed and completed to the requisite quality and in accordance with the Design Management Plan, contract schedule and budget. Undertake activities required to fore fill the PD role.
  • Write technical scope of works for all designers, agree deliverables lists and schedule for each project, work with the team to develop fee proposals for acceptance by the Project Manager and Commercial Manager, agree lines of communication between different design organisations and site teams, monitor performance and close out design contracts.
  • Ensure that designs take proactive account of health, safety, welfare, and sustainability, in line with the Costain requirements including, championing Safe by Design.  Audit compliance with the CDM Regulations 2015, Heathrow governance.
  • Ensure procurement and call off contracts for subcontractors are fit for purpose and capture all design scope and process requirements.
  • Ensure that design change, risk and opportunity and requirements are properly identified, recorded, assessed, implemented, managed and authorised as appropriate for multiple stakeholders to gain maximum project benefits and value.
  • Facilitate co-ordination of design between multiple design organisations and ensure that regular design reviews are held to ensure the BIM model is accurate, suitable clash free and being used to its full advantage.
  • Ensuring technical reviews of main designer and subcontractor design or technical information is undertaken at the appropriate times and meet the project/programme requirements. This may involve coordinating the reviews by the main designer.

Working closely with the Construction team to gain feedback into the design from their buildability reviews to ensure the design is safe and fit for purpose

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

  • Minimum 5 years’ design management and involvement with main or subcontractor design management of predominantly Building Services and associated Mechanical items.
  • Working for a Contractor in a complex project with multiple stakeholders in an Aviation or similar environment
  • Minimum 5-10 years practical experience within MEP on large construction contracts
  • Strong understanding of Engineering Principles and CDM Regulations

Desirable

  • Knowledge and understanding of construction contract law
    • Have a background in either Design and or installation-based of MEPh systems
    • Extensive technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices.
  • Training in Health & Safety and Environmental management
  • Knowledge of testing and commissioning
  • Knowledge of HAL Standards and processes
