Overview of Role  

The Anaesthetic Registrar is a key member of the hospital's clinical team whose primary role is to provide and oversee care to patients in the Operating Theatre, the Cardiac Cath lab, Coronary Care Unit and to any other patients in the hospital who require acute medical intervention. 


Specific Overview of the post includes but not limited to:

Pre-operative Assessment:

  • Conducting thorough patient evaluations to assess fitness for anaesthesia.
  • Reviewing medical history, current medications, allergies, and prior anaesthesia experiences.
  • Ordering and interpreting preoperative tests and investigations.


Anaesthetic Management:

  • Developing and implementing anaesthetic plans tailored to each patient's needs.
  • Administering general, regional, or local anaesthesia.
  • Monitoring and managing patients' physiological status during surgery, including vital signs, fluid balance, and pain levels.


Intraoperative Care

  • Ensuring patient safety and stability throughout surgical procedures.
  • Adjusting anaesthetic levels as needed.
  • Collaborating with surgical teams to optimize patient outcomes.


Postoperative Care:

  • Managing patients in the post-anaesthesia care unit (PACU).
  • Monitoring recovery from anaesthesia and addressing any complications.
  • Ensuring effective pain management and providing instructions for postoperative care.


Emergency Response

  • Responding to anaesthesia-related emergencies, such as difficult airways, cardiac arrest, or severe allergic reactions.
  • Providing advanced life support and resuscitation as needed.

The Anaesthetic Department at UPMC Whitfield is a consultant delivered service. The team consists of an Anaesthetic Consultant who will work in collaboration with the Anaesthetic Registrar in patient care and in formulating management plans for patients.


Qualifications & Experience  

  • Proven ability to work as an effective team member.

  • Competent to work autonomously.
  • All posts at UPMC require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager or hospital management.
  • Completion of Mandatory Training as required by UPMC Management, including but not limited to:
  • Fire Training - Annual
  • Radiation Safety Training - Annual
  • Infection Prevention and Control Training - Annual
  • ACLS Training- Biennial
  • BCLS Training - Biennial
  • ICHGCP Training - Biennial-desirable
  • ICORG PI Training - Triennial-de
  • Manual Handling and Patient Movement Training - Triennial


Candidate Specification

Qualifications:  

  • Medical degree, MBBS pr equivalent
  • Current Full Medical Council Registration
  • Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists is desirable

Experience:

  • At least 5 years' experience as an Anaesthetic registrar in an acute hospital setting.

Job Specific Competencies:

  • Current ACLS and BLS


Duties & Responsibilities 

  • As an employee of UPMC, you will also have the responsibility of:
  • Provide services in Anaesthesia including diagnosis, treatment, and care for patients, both inpatient and outpatient.
  • Participate in departmental teaching/education programs.
  • Participate in research in Anaesthesia.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours Anaesthetic Registrar roster.
  • Participate in administrative matters as required by the General Manager or Clinical Director of UPMC Whitfield
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Observe all hospital policies and procedures and statutory regulations.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to the organisation's Quality & Safety and Work Health & Safety processes, including the development and implementation of safety systems, improvement initiatives and related training, ensuring that quality and safety improvement processes are in place and acted upon.
  • To ensure in consultation with the General Manager, Medical/Clinical Director that appropriate medical cover is always available having due regard to the implementation of the European Working Time Directive as it relates to doctors.
  • To supervise and be responsible for diagnosis, treatment and care provided by the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) treating patients under the Consultant's care.
  • To participate as a right and obligation in selection processes for Resident Medical Officers and other staff as appropriate.
  • To participate in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory, and corporate policies and procedures.
  • The Candidate can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying jobs at this classification level.
  • Participate and attend all code blue calls or INEWS calls within the hospital.
  • Assessment of the deteoriating patient.

Medication management

  • Adhere to all Medication Policies relevant to your role.
  • Will document and sign clearly all medications prescribed and administered prior to, during and post-surgical intervention.
  • Be responsible and accountable for all patients receiving any form of anaesthesia under your care.
  • Verify and document patient's current medication on admission if required.

  • Mandatory Clinical and non-Clinical Training (BLC, GCP, Fire safety etc).
  • UPMC/D3 e-Rounds
  • Other education activity (Conferences, lectures etc.) to meet the requirements of the statutory rules regarding Professional Competence Assurance, as well as to acquire and maintain the necessary skills relevant to the proper function of UPMC Hillman Cancer Centre at Whitfield.
  • Participation, within the departmental framework and guidelines, in research which may be multi-institutional (ICORG) or internal.
