Job Title: Catering Supervisor

Overall Aim of Job

To provide exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the centre of all we do.  

Supervises and coordinates employees engaged in serving food in the hospital and in maintaining safety, cleanliness of food service areas and equipment by performing the following duties.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

  • Trains workers in performance of duties, proper safe use, care and maintenance of equipment.
  • Assigns and coordinates work of employees to promote efficiency, quality control and quality assurance of operations.
  • Supervises and assists in serving of meals.
  • Oversees, or performs, set ups for special catered functions.
  • Inspects kitchen, records temperatures and dining areas and kitchen utensils and equipment to ensure sanitary standards are met daily.
  • Tallies patient menus & catered functions for production sheets.
  • Participate in the implementation of HACCP system, follow HACCP guidelines and ensure standards are being adhered to.
  • Ensure that all staff are provided with, and wear, full uniform and personal protective equipment, including footwear.
  • Assists in the preparing of work schedules as needed, verifies attendance, keeps records of hours worked and covers any absences in posted schedules.
  • Assists in the administration and makes suggestions for improving department fire and disaster plans, reporting of Injury, lifting techniques, universal precautions, SDS and HACCP.
  • Oversees or performs assembly of patient food trays and arranges for service.
  • Assures tray-line work is done accurately and efficiently, with area being cleaned as needed.
  • Participates in departmental initiatives to improve patient satisfaction i.e. surveys, patient interviews, quality improvement efforts etc.
  • Follow the diet sheets as set out by the Clinical Nutritionist and ensure that patients get the correct menu.
  • Follow all dietary changes as outlined by the Nursing Staff.
  • Help build positive atmosphere, through positive leadership, to maintain good communications and working relationships with management, colleagues, staff, patients and customers alike.
  • If necessary, deal with patient complaints to a positive outcome or bring to the attention of a manager if unable to do so at the time.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all staff and patients, using training provided/ risk assessments/ SOP's and ensures all staff are following the same.
  • Helps to build and maintain a positive working environment within the catering team, using good communication with the multiple areas of the department.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Leaving Certificate or equivalent.
  • Computer literate.

Experience

  • A minimum of 1 year relevant experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of HACCP preferable.

Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge

  • Directly supervises employees in the food services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organisation's policies and applicable laws.
  • Participate in the implementation of HACCP system including the organisation of a HACCP team and the maintenance of all records relating to HACCP.
  • Observes all infection control policies for proper food handling, storage, hand washing, glove wearing, uniform and grooming. Works as team player to meet goals and department demands.
  • Exhibits high level of customer / patient relation skills.
  • Exhibits ability to work as member of team in daily performance of duties.
  • Interaction with all hospital departments.
  • Knowledge of all standard procedures for food preparation, goods in, storage and hygiene.

Personal Competencies

  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Proven leadership skills
  • Must be able to remain calm under pressure.
  • A good level of English is required.
  • All posts in Beacon Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager of hospital management.
