Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Hepatologist within the Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology based at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth.

You will join an enthusiastic and cohesive team of 14 Consultant Gastroenterologists and Hepatologists working in one of the largest acute hospitals in the country. The catchment population of Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is approximately 675,000 people. There are excellent opportunities for service development work, teaching and clinical research as part of a comprehensive and motivated multi-disciplinary team, and with the new University of Portsmouth Medical School, which welcomes its first intake of students in September 2024.

Portsmouth provides easy access to beautiful countryside including the South Downs and New Forest National Parks. There are excellent seaside and sailing facilities and the city is only an hour and a half from central London. The area offers all the lifestyle opportunities of metropolitan, rural and coastal life.

The role will comprise a mixture of outpatient clinical work, endoscopy and in-patient care, with supporting professional activity time.   The successful candidate will join a team of 14 consultants in Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a wide range of specialist interests including advanced endoscopy, IBD, clinical nutrition, hepatology, ERCP/EUS and upper GI therapeutics. They are supported by a team of 7 registrars and several clinical nurse specialist teams, including 5 Hepatology Clinical Nurse Specialists.  

This post will include a commitment to in-patient care of specialty patients on an approximately 1:5 basis (currently in 3 week blocks).   Accreditation in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology is required, although the commitment to general medicine is limited to management of small numbers of out-lying general medical patients on the Gastroenterology and Hepatology wards. This post will include a commitment to the out of hours endoscopy rota (currently 1:8), which delivers a 7-day emergency out-of-hours endoscopy/gastroenterology service, including weekend / bank holiday review of selected in-patients.  Provision of ERCP and / or EUS is not an essential requirement for this post, but it may be possible for this to be included for those with a Hepatobiliary sub-specialty interest.  

The successful candidate will work within the Portsmouth hepatology service, which since 2010 has grown rapidly to become one of the largest in Southern England.  There are established links for liver transplantation with the Royal Free Hospital, including a joint 2-monthly satellite clinic at Queen Alexandra Hospital. There are comprehensive diagnostic and interventional GI radiology services, including provision of TIPSS and ablative therapies for HCC.  An excellent specialist nursing team provide treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, management of stable cirrhosis and virtual management and monitoring of haemochromatosis and autoimmune liver disease. We are a core member of the Wessex Hepatology ODN, providing treatment of Hepatitis C and second-line therapies for PBC. Our services for alcohol-use disorders, MASLD/MASH and HCV have received national recognition and we have a thriving clinical trials programme supported by a hepatology research fellow.

This is a great opportunity to join an enthusiastic and innovative unit.  Development of sub-specialty interests is encouraged, as is participation in research and innovation, building on the existing strong clinical research portfolio in Hepatology and Endoscopy within the department. The new University of Portsmouth Medical School opens in September 2024 and there are excellent opportunities for teaching, both at undergraduate and post-graduate level.
