Our in-house legal team act as trusted advisers and partners to our business and Board; finding practical solutions that support the goals of business while ensuring we meet our obligations as a listed company. We now have a new opportunity for aa  Legal Counsel to join the team that was nominated for In-House Legal Team of the Year at the 2023 Lawyer Awards  on our growth journey! 
So, what’s it all about?You'll be at the forefront of protecting our business and driving growth. You'll provide expert legal advice on a wide range of matters, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. You'll also play a key role in supporting strategic projects, such as mergers and acquisitions, helping us to expand our reach and achieve our business goals.

As Marshalls is FTSE250 listed company you will have a focus on the regulatory and compliance needs of the group. This will tie in with your work in key areas such as commercial contracts, data protection, intellectual property, general litigation, real estate and general compliance.

Your fantastic communication and sound commercial reasoning will be put to good use as you work closely with our Chief Legal Officer & Company Secretary and Senior Legal Counsel in managing external Counsel and relationships with statutory bodies and regulators.

You will also have the opportunity to support the development of a new generation of legal counsel by working with our Solicitor Apprentice. A learning mind set, and agility are key given the diverse nature of the work you will be covering as part of our Marshalls in-house Legal Team. This is a fantastic opportunity for you to pursue your ambitions and join our close knit and supportive team.
What will you need to bring with you?

  • Qualified to practice Law in England and Wales with up to three years PQE. Prior in-house experience will be considered but is not essential
  • Relationships: the ability to build strong internal relationships as a trusted business adviser and influencer
  • Communication skills: evidence of an ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Data protection: good knowledge of data protection legislation and its practical application in a business context
  • Commercial contracts experience: drafting, negotiating, reviewing and advising across a broad range of contracts, including standard T&Cs, NDAs, public sector tender frameworks, technology agreements and other supply agreements
  • Litigation: assessment, pre-litigation advice and managing non-material commercial litigation
  • Intellectual Property: working knowledge of intellectual property rights, registration and protection
  • Real Estate: non-litigious, transactional work e.g. leases and renewals and acquisitions and disposals 
  • General Compliance: experience of “horizon scanning” to assess and advise on the practical impact advising on the changes in law
  • Training: a willingness to develop and deliver training to internal teams on key legal developments


It would be a bonus if you have…

  • Experience of working with listed companies
  • Experience of Mergers & Acquisitions
  • Companies Act: working knowledge of the Companies Act and our statutory obligations
  • Employment law experience
