Health & Safety Manager

A leading manufacturing of food packaging business is seeking a dedicated NEBOSH qualified Health and Safety Manager to take full responsibility and accountability for managing, advising, and facilitating the Health and Safety function. This standalone role requires a full understanding of current and pending Health and Safety and environmental legislation, an understanding of manufacturing, machinery and machine operations, along with the interpersonal skills to create a safe, healthy, and operationally compliant environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as the business advisor for safety, assisting managers, supervisors, and individuals to meet Health and Safety responsibilities under relevant legislation.
- Based on the shop floor and office based, drive the health and safety initiatives and projects
- Stay updated on changes in legislation, bringing new and relevant information to the business.
- Attend external courses/seminars for accurate interpretation and implementation of legislation.
- Develop and maintain suitable and sufficient Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS) and Environmental Management Systems (EMS).
- Prepare Health and Safety strategies, action plans, and oversee the development of internal policies.
- Ensure full implementation and operation of health, safety, and risk management systems across the site.
- Investigate accidents and near-miss situations, implementing corrective actions.
- Conduct health and safety inspections and prepare reports.
- Propose solutions to Health and Safety issues in collaboration with Operations, Engineering, and HR.
- Establish and maintain Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Risk Assessments (RAs) for all manufacturing processes.
- Coordinate internal and external training requirements for employees.
- Assist in COSHH assessments and ensure compliance with food safety aspects.
- Oversee monthly Health and Safety meetings and quarterly First Aid and Fire Marshall meetings.
- Manage and report on accident reporting and data analysis to the Group.
- Ensure regular testing of emergency evacuation procedures and conduct noise surveys.
- Support the Compliance and Environmental Manager on Environmental duties linked closely with the Health and Safety function.
- Occasional travel to other sites for training and development
- Participate in environmental awareness training and active projects as required.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Essential: NEBOSH qualification.
- Essential: Car owner/driver and the flexibility to travel to other sites as needed
- Desirable: Degree in Engineering or a science-based discipline.
- Essential: Experience in a manufacturing/machinery and machine operation
- Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, worker consultation, and environmental targets impacting Health and Safety.
- Proficient in PC usage and able to analyse data for effective decision-making.
What’s on offer:
- 25 days holiday + Bank Holidays (1 extra day after 1 year, 2 extra after 5 years).
- Hours of working: 36.5. Mon-Thu 9-5 (half hour lunch) / Fri 9-4 (half hour lunch) - can be some flexibility around this which could be discussed/agreed.
- Bonus – max 3.75% salary (after 3 months).
