Mission

The mission of the Engineering Manager is to lead and manage the engineering team and their projects from initial concepts throughout the development process to being ready for mass production. This involves using technical skills to understand and solve engineering problems, interpersonal skills to motivate and develop the team, and project management skills to ensure that all engineering projects run to time and budget.

 

Additionally, the Engineering Manager plays a crucial role in the engineering sales process where they own the overall specification and costing process for engineering RFQ’s. This involves using excellent presentation skills to generate proposals based on their own knowledge combined with that of other architects and engineers within the business.

 

The Engineering Manager uses their hardware and embedded software design skills to enable them to understand and effectively communicate issues with the team and management whilst also having the ability assist and get involved in embedded electronics and software designs projects.

 

Key Responsibilities and Duties

  • The Engineering Manager has numerous responsibilities and duties within the engineering department as well as in supporting the rest of the business on a technical basis. The core items are:
  • Leadership and management of the engineering team to ensure that they are mentored, developed and supported to achieve both their own and the company’s goals and objectives
  • Ownership of project time and cost estimation as well as project management within the engineering department. This will include the generation of proposals with assistance from your team and Technical Lead as well as other departments
  • Ownership of the full design process from requirements capture, through implementation and on to the hand over for production manufacturing
  • Ownership of process and efficiency improvements to reduce project time scales and costs and ensure our engineering services remain competitive on the open market
  • Ownership of product compliance services within the company. This involves staying abreast of the current regulatory standards such as RED, IEC/UL (phone number removed), ATEX etc and understanding their impact on design architecture and implementation at a high level and enabling your team to produce EMI, safety and documentation compliant products
  • Ownership of the PCN process for both manufacturer and customer PCN’s 
  • Ownership of the engineering budget to ensure that the correct equipment is in place to enable your team to work efficiently and effectively
  • Generation of departmental reports and KPI data such as utilisation, planning accuracy etcbitbox
  • Working closely with the Technical Lead, Field Applications and Sales teams to ensure that the correct engineering solutions are offered to customers
  • Ensuring that a robust and effective review process is maintained for the designs that your team generate
  • Ensuring that your team generate high quality, technically detailed documentation and effectively communicate with other departments and customers
  • Ensuring that management and customers are kept informed of overall progress, issues and corrective actions that will be taken to resolve any issues
  • Ensuring that the Field Applications and Sales teams are aware of the current loading so that they know what engineering capacity is available
  • The ability to perform embedded electronics design and development work to support your team if required
  • Use of revision control and other company systems to ensure that your and your teams work is stored in an orderly, easy to navigate manner
  • To stay abreast of current technologies and make suggestions where they could be used within the business
  • Ensuring compliance with ISO9001 and other relevant quality standards/procedures. This includes reporting any deviations from these standards/procedures, completing corrective actions and making recommendations to prevent similar deviations in the future.
