Estimator - Structural steel

Salary: £40,000 - £55,000
Location: Derby - potential hybrid working
Objective: Develop and manage tenders to secure new projects for the structures business, ensuring department practices are effective and meet business needs.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
Estimating:
Documentation Review:
- Read and interpret enquiry documentation to formulate tenders.
- Perform manual and electronic take-offs from Structural Engineer's drawings.
- Understand and interpret quantity schedules produced from 3D models.
Technical Proficiency:
- Comprehend product specifications, business strategies, and engineering complexities to accurately formulate bids.
- Apply basic construction planning and sequencing knowledge to estimate construction costs and interpret costs provided by others.
Pricing & Presentation:
- Create spreadsheets for pricing material supply, engineering, fabrication, transportation, management, and site construction of major timber projects in commercial, residential, and leisure sectors.
- Incorporate subcontract support trade pricing into bids.
- Present bid strategies, risk profiles, and commercial aspects to internal stakeholders.
Tender Documentation:
- Complete all pricing components for bid submissions, including price summaries and bills of quantities.
- Develop comprehensive tender documents detailing risk mitigation, clarifications, qualifications, pricing, terms, and specifications.
Client Interaction:
- Attend pre-bid and mid-bid meetings with clients and engineers, maintaining detailed records of discussions.
- Participate in post-tender meetings to discuss submitted tenders, respond to actions as required, and keep detailed records.
Work Planning:
- Prioritise work based on deadlines and communicate impacts of others' deadlines.
- Assist in valuing variations and present information clearly both internally and externally.
- Seek and chase feedback on tenders from clients.
Skills:
- Ability to work independently or as part of a wider bid team.
- Enthusiastic leadership within the Structures commercial team, contributing positively to the development of the commercial department and wider business.
- Openness to new methods and systems of work.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with software like Tekla Structures and Asta Powerproject is beneficial.
Critical Performance Measures (CPMs):
- Accuracy of tender pricing.
- Number of tenders secured.
- Client feedback on tenders.
- Up-to-date record-keeping.
- Clarity of information presented.
Professional Qualifications:
- Not required.
Experience:
- Experience in a subcontractor construction environment.
- Must have a good background in structural steel
- Experience in people and process management.
- Familiarity with various contract forms.
- Proficient in MS Word and MS Excel.
