Senior Platform Engineer
£90,000
Bristol (1 day per month)
Tech 4 Good / Sustainability

We have been working with this amazing business for 5 years and supported them to grow from the 3 founders to 60 people. I'm so proud of what they have achieved and very excited to be supporting their growth again this year.

I'm not just saying this but they blow my mind every time we sit down, they are a true Bristol sucuess story, live and breathe tech for good and recently closed investment of $22 million.

A bit about them: They are a purpose-led sustainable FinTech, providing transparency and influence for investors who want to have impact with their money. They believe in a financial system that serves both people and planet. So, they have built a platform that creates value-aligned investments for people (environmentalists, feminists, tech enthusiasts...) and giving those people their right to a shareholder voice. They are an FCA authorised and at their most exciting stage of development as their app goes live in the market with 3 HUGE clients.

As the business grows, so does the benefit of investing into engineers and their tools. I am looking for an infrastructure engineer who feeds off empowering product engineers with superpowers. Fast builds/tests, in-depth tests with good feedback are all the powers that they have pushed and hope you can help improve further.

The day to day:
You'll work in close collaboration with the VP of Engineering and other squads helping to drive technology improvements, DevEx and generally empowering the engineering function move with agility.

* Lead and own the platform function making it an eminent component in the success of engineering through close collaboration with other squads.
* Provide input into the design, development and implementation of systems automation and tooling to help engineering teams deliver reliable, secure and cost efficient solutions.
* Work closely with other engineering teams to strengthen DevOps and ensure the quality of automation is a foremost consideration. You'll drive best practice in IaC and deployment to help maintain the agility and stability of engineering and the platform.
* Take a proactive approach to the maintenance and development of the cloud estate (AWS/GCP) and infrastructure supporting distributed systems.
* Maintain and improve observability mechanisms to ensure teams can introspect the systems within their domain whilst using feedback loops to continuously improve systems.
* Develop comprehensive documentation and pair with other teams/team-members to help cross pollinate knowledge and reduce silos.
* Support the wider engineering team in triage of infrastructure or system performance related issues.
* Contribute to technical strategy discussions and have a strong input on the direction of travel for the platform in view of business growth.
* Help to implement, monitor and improve cloud security controls and software engineering security.

Skills and Experience
These are desirable rather than essential criteria. I would also like to chat to folk who do not have all the listed criteria but think they have what it takes and a willingness to learn by doing.
They are trying to build a team that can conquer every challenge, speak every language, and understand every user. They have an ambitious mission to change the world so they hope to lead by example with a diverse and inclusive team that reflects the world they want to see.
* You possess a solid understanding of the fundamentals of computer science having completed further education in computer science or similar, or with equivalent commercial experience.
* You love to collaborate with other engineers to help empower teams to do their best work.
* You're highly experienced in Kubernetes and containerised micro-services architectures. This is essential

It would also be beneficial if you've worked with service mesh (e.g. Is=o or similar).

* You possess many years of experience writing maintainable Terraform that conforms to industry best practice.
* You've operated complex, distributed systems in cloud platforms (AWS/GCP) using managed services including EKS, RDS, Lambda and CloudWatch.
* You're a confident programmer and able to produce well written, maintainable code in languages including Bash and Go. Equally, you're comfortable in turning your hand to other languages and DSLs as need arises.
* You're familiar with relational databases and you're competent with SQL (ideally Postgres) and managed databases services such as AWS RDS.
* You have exceptional knowledge of CI/CD automation (ideally GitLab).
* You have a broad understanding of so\ware architecture and you're competent at traversing mature, complex codebases.
* You take an active interest in ensuring secure-by-design is a foremost principle in the code you write and the infrastructure you deploy.
* You aren't afraid to tackle ambiguous problems and you're accomplished at making complex challenges tractable whilst having a good sense for when to pair to move
faster.
* You can make tactical decisions because you understand the broader technical strategy and business context and you try to weave this thinking into your day to day.
* Previous experience in a scale-up environment where prioritisation and working to hit your goals is strongly encouraged.
