We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Chief Development Engineer, to be involved in prospecting world changing technology by developing meaningful relationships with some of largest entities across the globe.

Job Purpose:

Reporting to the Engineering Director, the Chief Development Engineer is accountable for leading all aspects of the Validation and Verification Programme for the SMR business.

This involves senior leadership of a large multi-disciplinary team, accountable for ensuring validation of engineering requirements and their basis and all aspects of structured verification planning, test development and execution, in order to deliver the required substantiation evidence and data to support the evolving design and safety case.

Key Results & What Can Be Achieved in The Role:

The role is accountable for the full scope of test rigs and demonstrator activity, ranging from detailed materials testing through to large scale thermal hydraulic rigs and demonstrators.

Extensive engagement with supply chain and research institutes is a critical part of the role, as the bulk of the rigs are developed and executed externally within the supply chain.

There will be extensive management of packages of work, test rig and demonstrator programmes within the supply chain.

The Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Leading and delivering large complex programmes, managing large teams, and providing clear strategic leadership of a large programme and budget.

Experience in a senior leadership position, managing circa 50 people, and managing a budget of circa £40M per annum across a wide range of suppliers.

Proven experience of implementing best practice methods and new ways of working, whilst leading and coaching a diverse team.

Accountable for strategic aspects of commissioning including development of the power station commission schedule and design for commissioning strategies.

  1. Structured verification and validation expertise and experience of leading teams to deliver an extensive V&V programme.

Accountable for verification of the SMR product(s) to ensure that compliance with all design and business-related requirements.

Clear planning and application of structured verification, with development of effective and robust processes across the business to support all aspects of V&V.

  1. Test rig design and realisation experience, with extensive management of packages of work, test rig and demonstrator programmes within the supply chain.

Efficient definition and deployment of the required test programmes, rigs and test vehicles to deliver the required timely evidence and data to support the evolving design and safety case. with the associated assurance of health and safety across all aspects of work.

  1. Systems Engineering and related process expertise.

Systems engineering application in design and related process development, with strong relevant contextual engineering experience in applicable industry applications.

Relevant practical engineering experience to support contextual application of verification practices.

  1. Supply chain and stakeholder engagement, management, & influence.

Extensive engagement with supply chain and research institutes is a critical part of the role, as the bulk of the rigs are developed and executed externally within the supply chain.

As a senior engineering and integration role, this position will require extensive interaction at all levels, internal and external to the company and strong collaboration across all business functions.

The candidate will need to show excellent communication and collaboration characteristics and very strong influence in order to bring all parties together and drive the challenging programme forward to realise the common goals.

Qualifications & Training:

The candidate will be a Chartered Engineer or equivalent and hold a relevant technical degree level

qualification or will have equivalent relevant industry experience.

Pay and Benefits

Starting from £105,000 (DOE) plus:-

  • Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 25%
  • Long term shares options up to 15%
  • Benefits Allowance - £10,500, enabling you to create a bespoke package or take as salary.
  • Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
