Work for a London Borough Council as an Interim Head of Policy, Partnerships and Cohesion

What you will be doing

  • This is a high-profile role which has Council wide responsibility for leading and advising on corporate policy, partnership and cohesion related activity
  • To be the expert lead on Corporate Policy and deliver the council's Corporate Plan for the Council, and provide professional and expert leadership, advice, and direction to enhance the strategic direction of the Council, including personally leading on major cross council projects through the implementation of agreed policy
  • This post will lead on ensuring the council has a robust policy framework built around our Corporate Plan. It will lead on supporting and developing strategic partnerships, developing and implementing cross-cutting strategy and leading the development of the Council's relationship with our many diverse communities
  • This role will have a key part to pay on promoting our equalities and diversity objectives
  • To be responsible for enhancing the Council's reputation by building relationships with key external public policy makers, managing any legislative and or policy risks to the Council and actively shaping the public policy debate
  • To manage the governance, political processes, forward planning and policy research/analysis and development for the Corporate Leadership Team, Corporate Leadership Forum (CLF) and Scrutiny Leadership Group (SLG), made up of lead Scrutiny Councillors
  • To be the Council's statutory Scrutiny Officer, developing the annual scrutiny work programme, lead the delivery of research and review programmes, and provide rigour and support to the scrutiny function
  • To lead and direct the strategic development of the Council's response to equality, diversity and community cohesion issues in the borough with the aim of building on the communities strong community cohesion
  • To work alongside the Head of Community Safety and Resilience to lead and advise on the prevention of terrorism and extremism
  • To be the expert lead on Prevent for the Council, and provide professional and expert leadership, advice, and direction to enhance community cohesion

Experience required to be considered

  • Current relevant national, regional and local legislation, frameworks and policies and their implications for local government such as the Equalities Act, and the Counter Terrorism Strategy - CONTEST
  • Understanding and awareness of the political processes in local Government
  • Knowledge of committee and constitutional affairs in local Government
  • Awareness of major policy issues facing local Government and major trends in policy
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, a high level of political awareness and community dynamics
