Major Recruitment are recruiting for a Harvesting Manager / Head of Harvesting located in East Yorkshire!

Our client is a notable family run company specialising in the cultivation and distribution of fresh mushrooms. The company is famously recognised for its commitment to quality and sustainability and due to year on year success, they are looking to add to their team!

What will your day to day look like?

  • Targets: You will stablish and maintain hourly targets for pickers to ensure both quality and quantity of harvested mushrooms meet set standards.
  • Development: Your role will be to provide training, coaching, and mentoring to staff and supervisors to achieve desired picking rates, ensuring skill development and adherence to best practices.
  • Staff Organisation: You'll develop and implement staffing plans for the growing rooms, ensuring adequate coverage. Coordinate with agencies to fulfill staffing needs when necessary.
  • Recruitment and Planning: Make decisions regarding staffing, including recruitment and overall workforce planning to maintain efficient operations.
  • Daily Evaluation: Assess the crop daily and ensure appropriate staffing levels based on anticipated yields. Adjust plans as needed to optimize output.
  • Maximize Yield: Ensure that graze picking (selective harvesting) is performed correctly to maximise crop yield and quality.
  • Quality Assurance: Maintain high product standards with focus on weights, sizing, stem length, punnet identification, and proper capping.
  • Planning: Participate in daily operations meetings to plan staffing, yield projections, house assignments, and work hours for the following day.
  • Coordination: Ensure customer orders are met by aligning picking schedules with packhouse sales requirements.
  • Training New Pickers: Ensure new pickers and placers follow relevant safe systems of work and safe operating procedures.
  • Encouragement: Foster a positive and cohesive teamwork environment to achieve daily picking targets.
  • Communication: Work closely with Harvesting Team Leaders, Supervisors, Growing Manager, Production Manager, and Engineering Manager to address issues with team members, yields, or machinery.
  • Performance Evaluation: Continuously monitor and evaluate picking statistics, ensuring harvesters meet minimum targets. Apply disciplinary measures as needed.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure all activities are conducted safely in line with established protocols.
  • Timely Reporting: Report any issues to the Operations Director promptly for immediate resolution.
  • Maintenance: Detect and rectify any performance or safety issues with plant or equipment in a timely manner.
  • Innovation: Champion industry best practices and promote the adoption of new technologies where applicable.
  • Legislation Adherence: Ensure adherence to food safety culture, legislation, guidelines, and company policies. Participate as a member of the site's Food Safety, HACCP, TACCP, and VACCP teams.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Promote and adhere to best practices in accordance with company health, safety, and quality regulations.
  • GMP and Housekeeping: Ensure strict adherence to good manufacturing practices and housekeeping standards (clean as you go).
  • Waste Minimisation: Control and minimise waste while actively participating in continuous improvement initiatives.

About you...

This role requires strong leadership, organisational, and communication skills, with a focus on quality control, efficiency, safety, and continuous improvement within the mushroom farming operations. The ideal candidate for the role will have:

  • Mushroom picking experience (DESIRABLE)
  • Previous experience at a supervisory level.
  • Good communication skills & people management skills (ESSENTIAL)
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good basic IT & Numerical skills
  • Team player
