User Experience Designer

- Location: Flexible
The Vacancy
We are recruiting for the role of User Experience Designer in our IT Team.
While we are proud that Ofsted judged us to be ‘outstanding’ when they inspected us in early 2024, we haven’t come this far only to come this far. This outcome has energised us to just keep getting better at what we do for children and families.
Our IT team is based all across England and so we are genuinely flexible on your location. However, there may be some very occasional requirements to travel and we know many colleagues welcome the chance to work in a truly hybrid way that offers the best of working from home and in the office. Therefore, it may be helpful if you are located close to locations such as London and Leeds where many of our IT team are technically based.
We trust and empower colleagues to work in a hybrid way, providing the resources, equipment and support, so that individually and collectively, we can be the voice of children and young people when the family court makes critical decisions about their futures. We provide extensive wellbeing support for colleagues, as well as excellent benefits, all of which we hope encourages you to join us.
We are a diverse, inclusive organisation that is a safe space for colleagues with shared aspects of identity and lived experience, which helps ensure we provide a service which promotes the diversity and uniqueness of children and families from all backgrounds. We especially welcome applications from people from diverse backgrounds as we strive to ensure our workforce reflects the diversity of the children and families we work with.
Let us tell you a bit more about the role…
While predominantly known for the role Cafcass takes in supporting children and families, what may be less well known is that our targeted use of technology is a key factor in ensuring we are at the forefront of our sector.
We’re a digital organisation rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2024, and we continually invest to drive performance and efficiency; we have wholly cloud-based technology stack that is essential in supporting and enabling a diverse, flexible and highly mobile workforce. Technology is a critical enabler for our staff and we are proud to work hand-in-hand with colleagues to provide the tools and service that ultimately benefits children and families.
We mostly work with a range of private sector partners to deliver our IT service but we also have an in-house development team, which if you join us as UX Designer, will see you work closely with the Product Manager and Product Owner, and colleagues right across IT and the wider organisation to:
- Consult and collaborate with stakeholders at all levels to capture business requirements
- Create compelling, intuitive and innovative designs, user flows, wireframes, storyboards, mock-ups and prototypes
- Conduct user interviews and observational research, as well as user tests to improve, iterate and validate designs.
- Cultivate and maintain UX specifications and standards
The above is just a flavour and we encourage you to read the job description, which is available prior to applying, to ensure you have a greater appreciation of what the role will entail.
… and what we’re looking for.
- Experience and knowledge of business analysis, including requirements gathering
- Experience of UX design and conducting user interviews and tests
- A degree level IT qualification or equivalent.
- Experience of leading and managing a team
- An understanding of application design and architecture
You can also find a more detailed Person Specification as part of the Job Description. We strongly encourage you to read this so you can ensure your application fully identifies your suitability for the role.

Below we have given you an indication of a timetable we are hoping to work towards, although dates are subject to change.
Closing date: Monday 22nd July 2024
Initial interview: Week commencing 29th July 2024

There is a lot of information available at Cafcass Careers but if there is something else you need to find out more about, you can either contact Fleur Gardner from our HR Resourcing team if your query is to do with the recruitment process or is HR-related, or Sue McKeary if your questions relate more to the role, providing your contact information and best times / methods to get hold of you.
Whilst we will always try and respond a.s.a.p. we wouldn’t want you to miss the closing date before we are able to. If this is the case, we recommend you apply and as part of your application you can ask questions and this may allow us to contact you and provide you with the required information that will help you decide if you still wish to be considered.
