NHG Timber is a family owned and run business which specialises in sourcing Tropical and Temperate Hardwoods as well as Softwood Clears.  We represent quality Suppliers offering a wide range of products including lumber, logs, boules, semi-finished products and much more.  With a responsible approach, we take pride in trading timber globally, ensuring we nurture our client and supplier relationships.

Due to continued growth, we are now looking for a part time Compliance Manager to join our team, based out of our fantastic Surrey offices. The position offers some hybrid work, and flexibility around start and finish times.  We offer flexibility as to whether the hours are done over three, four or five days.

As our Compliance Manager, you’ll take our compliance activities to the next level, working closely with the directors and traders who each have their own country responsibilities.  The role will suit a highly motivated individual with a mature outlook whose primary objective is to protect the business by ensuring compliance with environmental and other legislation at the same time supporting commercial operations as much as possible.

Compliance Manager – Responsibilities

- Review, update and manage NHG’s Due Diligence System, considering compliance with EU Deforestation Regulation and other International and U.K. specific regulations

- Review and revise the current compliance framework to ensure that all compliance needs can be effectively managed.  This to include all aspects of compliance including timber regulation, GDPR and others as necessary

- Proactively manage data collection by other staff.

- Regularly review suppliers with traders.

- Work closely with the administration team to improve documentation and develop systems.

- Complete an annual audit and create an action plan to address any risks or concerns.

- Build positive relationships with key contacts within the industry, for example Trade Associations and Certification Bodies.  This may require occasional travel within the UK and possibly overseas.

- Work closely with traders to ensure that you have a good understanding of their requirements

- Develop close working relationships with all employees to ensure that they understand and comply with our due diligence system.

- Take responsibility for managing customer enquiries to ensure that all information is provided in line with compliance requirements.

- Field clients’ enquiries and requests for support.

- Ensure that the business has a clear understanding of all compliance requirements to ensure the business is protected.

Compliance Manager – Desired Skills

- Communicates effectively in English and can write reasoned, logical and coherent risk assessments.

- Is interested in green issues and/or forestry without being hostile to the timber industry.

- Has a proven track record of working effectively with senior leaders – challenging appropriately and when necessary.

- Is extremely well organised and brings high attention to detail.

- Strong computer skills requiring proficiency in Microsoft Office and potentially third party systems.

- Flexible approach with an ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects.

- Has some experience with compliance work within any industry

- A working knowledge of written French, with other linguistic ability an asset but not essential.
