Senior Finance Assistant - North Yorkshire Moors Railway

NYMR was founded in 1973 and is in the top 2% of UK charities by size. Today the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Trust is a not-for-profit charitable organisation run as part of the local community. It is a preserved historic railway stretching for 18 miles through the heart of North Yorkshire with over 100 employees, 1000 volunteers and 10,000 members. In addition to the railway they also operate Tea Rooms, Silver Service dining on the trains and retail outlets.

This role would suit technically capable candidates looking for a role where they can make a difference/add value and will allow them to grow and progress.

The purpose of the Senior Finance Assistant role is to ensure revenue is recorded in the financial records on accurate and timely basis, recording other financial transactions as required in order for the preparation of the accounting records and management accounts:

  • Ensure all income is accurately extracted from the booking systems and entered into the accounting software (Iplicit) on a timely basis.
  • Work alongside the finance assistant to ensure the sales ledger is updated for payments received for Group Bookings on a timely basis and to reconcile receipts relating to internet bookings and retail sales against the booking system on a timely basis to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Maintain and reconcile cash accounts on a timely basis to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Act as the finance point of contact with Customer Services and Booking Offices to enable the prompt and accurate resolution of customer queries and refunds
  • Prepare and submit Gift Aid claims relating to donations on ticket purchases monthly during the operating season.
  • To maintain accurate inter-company charging systems and to ensure that all charges due are processed in a precise and timely manner
  • Accurately prepare and post monthly journals to account for credit cards and prepaid debit card spend.
  • Post bank transactions and accurately complete the bank reconciliation weekly.
  • Other ad hoc duties as required. 

The person:

  • Previous experience is essential. 
  • The successful candidate will be methodical, organised and a good problem solver. 
  • You must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • The ability to engage with NYMR Mission and Vision and demonstrate NYMR Values is essential. 
  • Good IT skills are required.
