We are targeting the role at a Graduate / early-career candidate. The successful candidate will be working on developing cutting edge imaging technology for science, industrial and space applications. It is very interesting, but challenging work, and will see the successful candidate's work being integrated into instruments around the world (and above) performing ground-breaking science and supporting high value manufacturing.

  • In the role the role-holder will provide mechanical design to support the development of products.
  • This involves the creation of conceptual and detailed designs for vacuum-compatible and in-vacuum camera systems using 3D CAD and the creation of manufacturing drawings for parts and assemblies, as well as supporting the procurement and processing of such parts and assemblies maintaining good quality control and positive supplier engagement.
  • In joining a small team, the ideal candidate is someone who, along with the required technical skills and knowledge, actively takes charge of their tasks whilst working under the close direction of project management. They must also be open to contributing to the wider culture within the company to support other business units and colleagues from time to time

Daily tasks:

  • Mechanical design of camera system hardware and mechanical ground support equipment (MGSE) incorporating customer requirements and considering ease of production (assembly, integration, verification and test (AIVT))
  • Generate and maintain mechanical CAD-related documentation inc. specifications and manufacturing drawings
  • Support externally procured thermal and shock/vibration modelling services and analysis of designs (as required)
  • Generate inputs to project lifecycle reviews/reports etc. and other related documentation
  • Support mechanical procurement activities and supplier engagement
  • Create, maintain and implement mechanical production processes
  • Commission and test MGSE set-ups
  • Support structural testing of hardware (where needed)

Experience graduate or experienced:

  • Bachelor or Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent engineering/science discipline, plus
  • practical of experience working as a mechanical engineer performing tasks as per the key responsibilities would be beneficial

or

  • Other recognised professional qualifications, plus
  • 5+ years of experience working as a mechanical engineer performing tasks as per the key responsibilities

Key skills:

  • Proficient in Solidworks and Solidworks Simulation
  • Practical experience in mechanical assembly and testing of mechanical parts
  • Ability to produce accurate written records
  • Ability to follow accurately written procedures
  • Good IT skills and proficient using Microsoft Office
  • Proactive and self-managing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good technical and practical knowledge of mechanical design and how design influences manufacture, assembly and test
  • Experience of design within the space industry and working knowledge of ECSS would be considered an asset

A benefit if you have:

  • Experience of mechanical design and the operation of vacuum systems
  • Experience of working in a cleanroom environment
  • Experience of FEA and/or thermal analysis
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience of working in an SME or start-up environment

Onsite role **

  • Is willing to work 5 days a week 9am - 5pm (i.e. standard office hrs)
  • Is willing to work in the office every day in Northampton (i.e. on site, no regular remote or hybrid working is possible for this role)
  • Is comfortable with being the only person doing their job in the organisation (i.e. there is no big team here and the candidate will be expected to largely work independently, within our design processes and workflows, though regular supervision and training will be available)

The recruitment process will be as follows:

  • 15min online videoconference this will focus on getting to know the candidate primarily as an initial indicator of 'fit' to the company.
  • 60min interview in Northampton with the CEO and CTO (line manager). This will focus on candidate experience and competency against the requirements and skills in the job description. This will also enable the candidate to get an idea of their 'fit' to the company, the role and the team.
