About the role

We are hiring a Head of Engineering to provide further leadership and support to our rapidly scaling Engineering team. The team as a whole is responsible for all software development at Our Future Health, in support of our ambitious goals for the future. Ranging from web applications that our participants, clinical staff members and researchers use, to the data platforms and processing pipelines and supporting systems - you will have the opportunity to lead engineering in one of those areas. In terms of social impact this is huge, we are attempting something that is the first of it's kind at this scale.

As Head of Engineering, you will be the third team member within the Senior Engineering Management Team, as you settle into the team your peers will support you.

At Our Future Health, our mission is to transform the prevention, detection and treatment of conditions such as dementia, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.  We’re looking for people to join us on our journey. If you’re looking for a new challenge where you can contribute to helping future generations live in good health for longer, then we’re keen to speak with you.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Own engineering and engineering delivery in one of the major organisational areas, collaborating with your peers in Product, Science, and other functions, ensuring we are running productive processes with clear lines of communication whilst working on high-value projects and producing high-quality software and systems
  • Direct multiple engineering teams, providing line management to engineers and engineering managers.
  • Work with the Engineering Leadership Team on cross-cutting organisation-wide challenges as part of a growing and maturing organisation
  • Support career development, coaching, objective setting and encouraging an inspiring team morale
  • Showcase the team's growth and contributions to Our Future Health's Engineering Team.
  • Plan for future needs, managing permanent staff, contractors, and digital agency relationships.
  • Lead from the front, occasionally engaging in hands-on coding to support the team.
  • Collaborate on the technology roadmap, participate in decisions on platforms and tools, and shape the software development process.

What you won’t be doing:

  • Working in a siloed environment with no freedom to make decisions.
  • Working in a place where you can’t see the impact your expertise makes.

  • Technically astute and comfortable to guide technical discussions with the team
  • Ideally hold prior experience as a software engineer
  • Comfortable contributing to the code base, and technical discussions your team is handling
  • We are an Agile business, so a thorough understanding of Agile methodologies would be beneficial
  • Experience working with software teams practicing continuous delivery, using infrastructure-as-code and modern DevOps techniques, public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP), following best practices like code review and pairing using tools like Git and Github.
  • Be an effective communicator
  • You build a people-first, collaborative and empathetic environment
  • Experience previously delivering and maintaining consumer web or mobile products
  • Experience working with sensitive personal data; in environments with strong security considerations.
  • Any experience in digital health, healthcare, bioinformatics, life sciences or related domains would be advantageous!
