Job Overview:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented Transport Planning Technician to join our growing team in Manchester. The successful candidate will support the transport planning team in the development, analysis, and delivery of transport projects. This role involves working on a range of projects, from urban mobility plans to traffic impact assessments, and will provide technical and administrative support to ensure the smooth execution of our transport initiatives.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Gather, process, and analyze transport-related data such as traffic counts, journey times, and public transport usage. Prepare datasets for use in transport models and assessments.
  • Transport Modelling: Assist in the development and operation of transport models using software such as TRANSYT, VISSIM, SATURN, or similar. Contribute to the analysis of model outputs to assess the impacts of proposed developments or transport schemes.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical assistance in the preparation of transport assessments, travel plans, and feasibility studies. Support the team in the production of high-quality reports, plans, and presentations.
  • GIS and Mapping: Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create maps, analyze spatial data, and support transport planning projects. Assist in the visualization of transport data and the presentation of findings.
  • Survey Coordination: Organize and manage transport surveys, including liaising with contractors, collecting data, and ensuring the accuracy of survey results.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Assist in communicating technical information to clients, local authorities, and other stakeholders. Prepare materials for public consultations and stakeholder meetings.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate and organized records of project activities, including data files, reports, and correspondence. Ensure that all documentation is up to date and easily accessible for team members.
  • Policy Support: Support the team in reviewing and interpreting local, regional, and national transport policies, and assist in incorporating these into project work.
  • Sustainability Integration: Contribute to projects that focus on sustainable transport solutions, including active travel, public transport enhancement, and low-carbon transport initiatives.


Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related field.
  • Experience: A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in transport planning, traffic engineering, or a related role.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in transport modelling software (e.g., TRANSYT, VISSIM, SATURN) and GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS). Experience with CAD software is essential.
  • Data Skills: Strong analytical skills with the ability to handle large datasets, perform data analysis, and produce clear and concise reports.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Organization: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.


Desirable Skills:

  • Familiarity with UK transport policies and guidelines, such as the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and Local Transport Plans (LTPs).
  • Knowledge of sustainable transport practices, including cycling infrastructure, public transport systems, and traffic calming measures.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement and public consultation processes.
